Adagio Sea Trials : September, 2000, Bay of Islands and Whangaroa Harbor, New Zealand...

For Adagio's sea trials we sailed her from Opua, Bay of Islands to Whangaroa Harbor. Whangaroa is one of the highlights of cruising the east coast of the "Far North" of the North Island.

Baie de Kuto, Isle of Pines, New Caledonia : October, 2000... The Isle of Pines, "The Jewel of the Pacific", is one of Magic Dragon's favorite cruising grounds. Now that Adagio has followed in just a few of the DeRidder's tracks around New Caledonia, Isle of Pines is definitely on our list of "visit again soon". Visit the Isle of Pines website for more details.

Relatively few cruisers visit this area southeast of New Caledonia's main island - in the prevailing southeasterly tradewinds, it is a two-day upwind slog. We were more fortunate our first trip down, fast-reaching in a brief spell of easterlies. In November we made two more round trips from Noumea to Ile des Pins - not so lucky on the winds, but Adagio goes upwind very well, and can be a good powerboat as well when the winds go light.

Baie Saint-Maurice, Isle of Pines, New Caledonia : Oct-Nov, 2001... This lovely bay is east of Kuto - sadly too shallow for 99% of blue water yachts. Baie Saint-Maurice is home to the largest fleet of Kuny proa working sail craft. Pictured in this collection is the remarkable shrine, comprised of carvings contributed by all of the tribes of Ile des Pins.

Baie de Oro, Ilse of Pines, New Caledonia : November, 2000... We were a bit reluctant to make our way into the reefy, tide-locked anchorage at Oro. But after Magic Dragon told us how Oro was their favorite spot of all around Isle of Pines we got up our courage. The tricky bits of entry through and around the Oro reefs were a small entry fee for the most beautiful anchorage we've yet seen!

Noumea, New Caledonia : October-November, 2000 -- "The Paris of the Pacific"...

How fortunate we were to make Noumea Adagio's first landfall in the South Pacific. That Dorothy speaks pretty fluent French made the visit even more special. We have lived in Paris, and from many business trips to France learned to value and enjoy the French culture. Noumea is in fact a Department of France, as is Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. So the cruisers visiting New Caledonia can choose the vibrant city life of Noumea, or the serenity of hundreds of beautiful anchorages.

We've always wanted to cuddle a Koala - well we got our wish the day after we sailed into Brisbane!
