Hobart Sailing 2002 : October, 2001 through April, 2002... To paraphrase from the cruising guide "D'Entrecasteaux Waterways" : Hobart is exactly the right size to meet Aristotle's criterion for the ideal city-state: small enough to be friendly and easy going yet large enough to accommodate a university and medical school, botanical gardens, fine architecture, good library, symphony, excellent restaurants, theatre and more pleasure boats per capita than anywhere else in Australia. We first sailed on the River Derwent aboard a friend's boat, but were soon taking our friends for afternoon sails aboard ADAGIO, in between our numerous cruises around the Tasmanian coast.

Port Davey Cruise - The Southwest : February, 2002...A "crowded anchorage" in Tasmania means sharing a bay with one other yacht. During Adagio's cruise to the World Heritage Area of Port Davey and the South-West National Park, we sure didn't find any "crowded anchorages". Instead what we found is the most unspoiled wilderness cruising area Adagio has visited so far. Everywhere we are surrounded by weather-worn granite peaks - perfectly reflected in the mirror-like waters.

Other than by sea, the only way to explore South-West National Park is to bush-walk in on one of two challenging wilderness tracks. In one anchorage near the South Coast Track we saw a few hikers stopping to have a wistful look at Adagio at anchor. That night the hikers would be dining on freeze-dried and sleeping rough whilst the Adagio crew enjoyed their hot showers and another fine feed with Tasie wine. Hopefully the photo pages will better describe the experience...

East Coast Cruise : January, 2002... Sheer rock spires, dolphins and snowy beaches. In transparent water, Adagio finds herself alone in one anchorage after another. A "cooks night out" at Freycinet Lodge, sweet little Triabunna scallops. Three national parks. Dropping the hook in a new anchorage, meeting up with old friends from the Hobart cruising community, and new cruising friends who've sailed to Tasmania from the Pacific Northwest.

We've read about the east coast of Tassie, learned about favorite anchorages and bush walks from our Tasie friends - Adagio's first cruise from Hobart up to the Freycinet peninsula was an appetizer.

West Coast Land Cruise : April, 2002... Driving the Lyell highway from Hobart to Strahan with our friends Kathy and Joe Siudzinski, we passed through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers national park and south of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair national park. Our first stop was at Lake St. Clair, the deepest lake in Australia. It acquired this status because of the combined carving effect of three separate glaciers that were all channeled through the lake's area during past ice ages. We followed the interesting short nature trail to the spectacular Nelson Falls. After a visit to the town of Strahan, we proceeded north, to visit the old mining town of Zeehan and to cruise down the Pieman River to the shores of the Southern Ocean. The Henty Dunes were an unexpected treat.

Hobart Mountain Festival : March, 2002... In celebration of the United Nations International Year of the Mountain, residents of the town of Fern Tree on the slopes of Mt. Wellington and residents of Hobart organized the Mountain Festival. At community workshops children and adults designed and built giant puppets, banners, silk flags, shrines, masks and other artworks that reflect the environment of Mt Wellington, to be part of a procession and performance. The Mountain Orchestra designed and built their musical instruments for playing original music composed for the occasion. After several hours hiking on the mountain, we joined the audience at The Springs picnic area to celebrate Hobart's wonderful Mt .Wellington and her plants and animals.

Hastings Land Cruise : April, 2002... One of our day trips by car took us to Tasmania's Far South along the beautiful Huon River and the shores of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. We explored native forests, a boat building school, caves and rode on a bush tramway. Our fellow catamaran sailors Kathy and Joe Siudzinski joined us. One of the highlights of the trip was observing a platypus in the wild.
