Australia Wooden Boat Festival : The Australian Wooden Boat Festival has established a reputation as one of the world's best maritime events. Held on Hobart's vibrant waterfront, the four-day festival brings together the biggest collection of wooden boats in the southern hemisphere. Dorothy and I had attended the Victoria Classic Boat Festival just last September -- a wonderful and fun show -- but the Hobart festival was a much bigger and altogether superior event.

Our friend Andy Gamlin was Director of the festival. Everyone we've talked to agreed that Andy organized a totally remarkable event. Andy has carefully studied the famous festival held in Brest, France -- determined to put on an even more fun and informative program. Our enjoyment was enhanced by sharing the show with Les and Betsy Gunther, who are much more knowledgeable of classic vessels than are we. I think their bottom line on Hobart was that Andy achieved his goal.

You can read about the history of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival here -- going back to the inaugural show in 1994.

Bonorong Wildlife Park : Dorothy and I have spent many happy hours at Australian wildlife parks -- particularly the Tahune Wildlife Park near Cygnet in Tasmania. Since the Tahune park has unfortunately closed we picked the Bonorong park for the visiting Gunthers, as they were keene to see those Australian "cute and furry animals, particularly the oddly pocketed ones". That was a good choice -- very well managed, with all the primary marsupials represented. There were at least six Eastern Grey "roos" carrying joeys in the pouch, a six week old baby wombat, Koalas, etc. Incidentally, Koalas are not native to Tasmania, but can eat several types of eucalyptus native to the state.
